Now that I am back in the trenches of caring for a small human, I have realised how challenging it can be to create time to look after me. When I was in the thick of baby/toddler/preschool days with Maddie and Alfie, I didn't make myself a priority and lets's just say those were some tough years. For everyone.
Third time round, I know how important it is to make sure my needs are being met. Self care is our own personal responsibility. We each need to speak up, carve out time, ask for help to do the things that fill our cup. It can be bloody uncomfortable to verbalise that we actually may need to do XYZ in order to function but I promise, it's just like a muscle...the more you do it the stronger you become and the easier it gets. An unhappy women, wife and mother ain't fun to be around.
My favourite self care practices are the ones I create at home. I call them my "micro-moments". These are seemingly mundane, every day things we all do that I like to elevate and make a little bit special because I'll be honest, I can't always sneak off for a daily yoga, pilates, massage, mani-pedi session (although I am working on doing more of all of that now that the Pud is finally done to one sleep!).
My fave "micro moments" self care rituals are:
Taking a few moments each to thought dump. I'm not a journal/diary writer but I LOVE to just free right when I am feeling overwhelmed. I just get it all down and feel a stack better afterwards. Good in the AM and at the end of a day.
Why not make is super lux by creating a custom body oil. Base oils such as reship, sweet almond oil, jojoba oil and fractionated coconut oil are all great options. Add your essential oils and you are good to go. Far better than using some of the hideous stuff that contains a whole host of synthetic crap.
Move. It doesn’t need to be the world’s most strenuous workout but just get moving. This may be a roll around on a yoga mat for 10 or 15 minutes or it may mean a quick walk around the block. Nothing makes me feel more alive and human than stretching the legs.
Deep breathing. Gamechanger. Learn to breath using every part of your lungs and dedicate just 5 minutes to this practice. Do it in the shower, when you are in the car, on the loo…you get the idea. Elevate this practice further by using easy air, Frankincense or balance on your chest (diluted).
When I’m bathing Gus, I’ve taken to perching on the edge and soaking my feet. Nothing sweeter at the end of the day then nourishing your hooves. Pop some magnesium flakes and lavender essential oil in too. Bliss.
Start your morning shower by dropping a few drops of wild orange and peppermint essential oil onto a face cloth, drop it onto the floor and let the steam bring the aroma up to you. My favourite way to start each day.
It’s all in the little things. Once you start implementing some micro moments of self care into your day, it’s far easier to then start carving out the time to get to yoga, the gym, or have a massage or facial. Try implementing one new self care ritual each week and notice the changes in how you feel over a month or two.
