I had Maddie when I was 26 and two years later, Alfie arrived. When the kids were babies I tended to opt for organic products when it came to using things on their skin but to be honest, I never really looked too deeply into the ingredients on the back of the bottle.
Over the years I have become more concerned with what I put in and on our bodies. Fast forward nine years and with a surprise bundle on the way, I am determined to use safe, toxic free products in our environment and on our skin.
Now that I am 34 weeks pregnant, I've kind of hit preparation mode. I was running pretty short on time yesterday but wanted to get a batch of nappy cream done and in the cupboard. If you follow me on instagram, you would have seen my nappy cream insta-story - it literally took 15 minutes. So quick and easy.
The below recipe is incredibly simple to make and uses four ingredients plus essential oils. I have selected Lavender and Roman Chamomile for its calming and soothing properties and Tea Tree for its antimicrobial and antiseptic qualities.
I am not an aromatherapist, most of the research I have conducted recommends using a 1% dilution rate on children two years and over. Given I want to use the blend below from birth I have calculated this dilution rate at 0.25% and feel comfortable to try this. I'll let you know once the baby arrives how it goes.
- 1/2 cup shea butter
- 1 cup coconut oil
- 4 teaspoons beeswax pastilles
- 19 drops of doTERRA essential oils. I used 10 drops of lavender, 5 drops of tea tree and 4 drops of Roman Chamomile
- 4 tablespoons arrowroot powder
- Mix the shea butter, coconut oil and beeswax in a double boiler, or you can use a glass bowl and place it in a saucepan with an inch or two
- Bring the water to a boil to melt the ingredients.
- Remove from heat and add the arrowroot.
- Stir in the essential oils until well blended.
- As it continues cooling, pour the mixture into glass jars or high grade plastic containers (I use glass for home use and use small plastic containers when out and about)
- Keeps for 2–3 months.
There are many reasons why I love using doTERRA essential oils, we use them daily in all areas of our life, in a variety of different ways. I feel incredibly confident using doTERRA due to the rigorous testing the oils are put through. You can read more about that here
